Founded by Scientists: How Atom Started

Atom started in Hull in 2014, and not with a background in brewing so much as a background in curiosity. We were built on a simple idea: brewing is both an art and a science, and if you get properly obsessive about the science — temperature, process, precise fermentation — the art gets to run wild on top of it.

"Atom" isn't a random name. An atom is the fundamental building block of everything, and that's how we think about beer: get the fundamentals right — quality ingredients, exact process, an obsession with detail — and you've earned the right to experiment with flavour on top of it. Consistency underneath, curiosity on top.

From cask and keg to our own canning line

For years, Atom beer meant cask and keg — the pub trade, mostly. That changed during the pandemic, when we invested in our own canning line rather than relying on someone else's. It meant we could brew, keg, cask and can under one roof, and control exactly how each beer reaches you, whatever format you're drinking it in.

That single decision changed the shape of the business. It's the reason you can now get Atom delivered to your door in Hull or anywhere else in the UK, not just poured across a bar.

Where we are now

These days we brew from our site on Malmo Road in Hull, producing beer that's gone on to be distributed nationally and internationally — hop-forward specials that pick up awards, alongside a core range built to be the reliable, approachable beers you come back to. Every one of them is vegan-friendly, because there's no good reason it shouldn't be.

We're still a small, Hull-based team who'd rather be obsessing over a fermentation curve than writing marketing copy about ourselves — but if you want to see it in person, book a brewery tour and we'll show you exactly how the fundamentals get turned into flavour.
